Here is a list of the fics that you should also be reading, in about the order that I like
them in.
- Sound Hearts by KaosQu. One of the most well written stories I've come across, especially the interaction between Ranma and Ryoga. One I've read several times, hoping that it will have been updated by the time I get back to it again. Sadly, he's one of the slower writers.
In the top three best story's I have found. A truly massive story, this one will take you a long time to get through all eight chapters and the 13 side stories. 30 years in the future Ranma comes back to Japan for revenge. There he meets four girls in strength enhancing mechanical suits called hardsuits that have the same purpose. See what happens when they get off on the wrong foot. Everything just spirals out from there, encompassing at least three different universes and the survival of each depends on Ranma. Well written, great plot twists, and crossing over with just about every other series its a sight to behold. Does contain lots of swearing, but other than that a must read.
- Mirrors Multiplied by Jared Ornsted. Something is happening all the time in this story. It has to be one of the most entertaining pieces I've seen, especially for one that writes like I do, no plot thought out beforehand, just whatever happens to pop into their head. Ranma has lived many different lives, a ring he has rewriting history around him. At the end of that adventure he starts a new one, the beginning of this story. Read it now.
- Destiny's Child by Fire. An epic story that seamlessly combines two different series into one of grand scale. Plot twists abound, while the past and present tell their tale of loss and love during a war that most people never even knew of.
- Girl Days by Kenko. By far one of the funniest things I have ever read. Truly a great piece that is simply amazing with its insight into the weird and strange subject of femininity. Highly recommended.
- Hung Nguyen's site. Although this isn't a link to a single story you should read all of them at his website. He manages to make good stories no matter what he's writing about, something that I have found hard to do. Either that or some of my ideas just sucked no matter how well they were written. Boo hoo. Anyway, read 'em, they're all good.
Here they are, in no particular order, some of the best stories on the web.
- The Taming of the Horse by Vince Seifert. A very well written and thought out story that details what could very well be one of the conclusions to the Ranma storyline. One of many different possibilities on who and how Ranma finally ends up with, this is probably the most cannon story I've read that I really like. A must read unless you hate the Akane/Ranma pairing. While it is probably what the creator of Ranma One Half had in mind when she finished the series, its by far my least favorite pairing. But this one I really like. Read it.
- For Love or Money by Donny Cheng. This one I like because it is one of the first ones I read that explored Nabiki and Ranma together. It has two sequels, What Price Love and The Cost of Loving, or you can go to where all of his stories are kept by clicking here. The actual writing of these stories could use some polishing, but they have good ideas in them and move along well. I like them, what can I say, you probably will too, so go read them.
- A Deft Touch by John Morales. Another Ranma and Nabiki story, this one doesn't really have any action in it, but is still one of the thousands of possibly outcomes given the many events that surround Ranma and co. I happen to like this one, though the beginning is rather depressing, especially if you actually have seen the battle with Saffron in the manga like I have. To have lost after going through so much, it's amazing Ranma is still doing anything. Read if you want to get yourself in a better mood. Rather long, but something is always happening, either to or around the characters. Give it a shot.
- Special Delivery also by John Morales. Kasumi and Ranma, alternate universe. A chance meeting starts a chain of events that leads to the happiness of two people who, in the original timeline, are pretty lonely, especially given how many people constantly surround them. Told from one perspective sorta like a diary, this is one I read when I just want something quick and happy. It won't take you very long so read this one now.
- Sound Hearts by KaosQu. One of the most well written stories I've come across, especially the interaction between Ranma and Ryoga. One I've read several times, hoping that it will have been updated by the time I get back to it again. Sadly, he's one of the slower writers.
- Just Won't Die by Jeffrey "OneShot" Wong. Everything just spirals out from there, encompassing at least three different universes and the survival of each to Ranma. Well written, great plot twists, and crossing over with just about every other series its a sight to behold. Does contain lots of swearing, but other than that a must read.
Truly a great piece that is simply amazing with its insight into the strangest and dumbest of female occupations.
- Fate of Love by Jason Wong. This is one of the shorter stories I have listed here, but I thought the idea was original and the interpretation done of the Silver Millennium was amazing. I haven't really seen and Sailor Moon, I've just read the crossovers, but I rather like this rendition of it. I just wish the guy writing this could do it a little faster. Ranma and Rei, the Senshi of Mars, get together apparently in modern times as well as their story in the past. Hasn't really progressed to the point where things start happening in the modern world, but the past story is intriguing.
- Way of the Ninjitsu by Jason Wong. Another alternate universe, this one starting after the Neko-ken training. Ranma is, obviously, a ninja, rather different from a martial artist. Where in the manga Ranma fought many opponents (many many opponents) he only ever killed one of them. In this story he isn't learning to fight to subdue people, he is learning to fight in order to kill them quickly and without making a noise. There is no challenging, code of honor, or anything. If the opponent dies you have won and that is all that matters. A little cold blooded in places and kinda disturbing in some of the character profiles this person writes, but it is an immersive story for some of those reasons. These characters are incredibly fleshed out, with distinct personalities and complete history's that either come back to haunt them or have bad memories attached to them. Great piece, but its not really in the comedy sense that the Ranma series is.
- A Duet of Pigtails by Libby Thomas (linked to reikaifiles). This is an epic. Not nearly as long as Just Won't Die, but it has similar world shaping events. They just aren't on this world, but the one that is part of Magic Knights Rayearth. Never seen the series before, but things are well explained in this fic and you don't really need to know anything about the series to get what is going on. Incredible plot and well written (as are pretty much all of them on this list), this is one that I have read a couple times. Make sure you aren't in a cheerful mood when you start this one, though. It has some very depressing themes in it. A fic of extremes, read with caution. But read it anyway. (PS. There is A Duet of Pigtails: The Age of the Black Blade, then there is A Duet of Pigtails, Prologues 1 and 2. I would recommend skipping all those and reading Her Prelude and His Prelude, then start in on the actual story. Within those are references to the earlier chapters, and at that point I would stop and read them, or simply read the main story all the way through to the last posted part, then going back.)
- Heart of the Immortal by Anand Rao (linked to Tannim's site). A completely different take on what could have happened to Ranma. If he had been born several hundred years ago anyway. Ranma is immortal, nothing can kill him. He was cursed to be that way, watching everyone and everything he cared about wither away and die while he stayed the same until he fell in love with a thousand women. He's loved six. In four hundred years. Poor Ranma.
- Hearts Healing by D.F. Roeder. A crossover with two of my favorite series, Ranma and Tenchi Muyo. In an alternate Ranma universe he is training to be a doctor. After a while, he meets Ryoko. Strange things ensue, eventually resulting in chapter two.
