A New Angle (sic)

Shinji was down in the dumps.

Now that's not really anything new considering what a spineless, useless, 
good-for nothing son of a ...

...

Sorry, I got carried away. It won't happen again. Pinky promise.

Anyway, Shinji was depressed. Now, lest you think ill of the lad (perish 
the thought!) he actually had good reason to be depressed. Rei was acting 
as if she was already dead the way she was just walking around like some 
soulless clone or something. Asuka was in a coma (this fact made Shinji 
feel oddly ... frisky ... for some reason). Every other school kid was 
gone. And Misato was acting all Mulder-y most of the time. And the other 
times Misato just seemed to break down in front of her answering machine. 
This made no sense to Shinji at all.

Why was Misato so depressed? It's not as if she killed anybody close to 
her or something. These days she acted more depressed than Shinji 
himself.

Now that was depressing.

In any case, oddly enough, these days Shinji wasn't really as depressed 
as he could have been. You see, recently, he's made a new *special* 
friend.

Everybody who thinks this isn't gonna last raise their hands.

Kaworu and Shinji were walking on a street somewhere in Tokyo-3. Walking 
slowly, hand-in-hand watching the sunset with the fervor only 
lovers^H^H^H^H^H 'special friends' could achieve. Finally Kaworu spoke.

"Why are you a pilot, Shinji?"

Shinji could only think of one reply to that.

"I don't know."

"Is it because you wish for approval so much?" Kaworu persisted.

"..." Small alarms bells were now ringing in Shinji's head at Kaworu's 
line of reasoning. There was something ... odd about the way Kaworu was 
talking.

"You should know that your father does not love you. He only wants to use 
you."

"..." It's like Shinji's heard this before. If only he could place it.

"I can give you what you want. Companionship, loyalty, all these I have 
for you."

Where? Where has he heard this before?

"You'd be better of with just me. Why go back to your EVA."

"..."

"I'm better for you than your father will ever be. It's true, it's true."

And with that, Shinji was able to place it now.

That false concern.

That smarmy sense of self-righteousness.

And that awful, awful tag-line ...

Kaworu Nagisa was an ANGLE!

"Shinji, are you listening to me?"

Now, Shinji may be a wuss. But he knew how to deal with angles.

PEDIGREE!!!

author's stuff: first of all, WWF doesn't rot the brain. honest.

second, this thing came about due to my frequent frustration at common 
misspellings, most oftenly angel and angle. yes, i know it wasn't that 
good a punchline. sorry.

next time, watch out for the adventures of the Lion (Shampoo), the Witch 
(Kodachi), and the Wardrobe (Tsubasa) in the magical land of Nermia. 
coming to the FFML probably never as i don't even know what a turkish 
delight is. is that what you get after a turkish bath?

before anybody gets mad at me, I actually like Shinji ... just so long as 
i ignore his behavior during the movie i can still understand him and 
sympathize with him otherwise.

fanfiction status: yes, i'm still trying to work on 'First Born' and 'Eva 
Symphony'. real life is just too busy these days. things are (hopefully) 
gonna start calming down soon.
