URUSEI YATSURA - GREAT FATHER ATARU

DAISHI'CHA OF SAGUSSA (KNOWN) LIST

INSTRUCTIONS ON AMENDMENTS AND ADDITIONS

Released by Fred Herriot (fherriot@yahoo.com)

"HEY!!!! WE WANT NAMES!!!! GIVE US SOME NAMES!!!!"

Hi, Lufy here! I'm also known as Daishi'cha #29363, one of the one hundred thousand (that's right, 100000) daishi'cha presently on Sagussa. We've got a major problem here; not all of us have names. If you take a look at the daishi'cha list presently on websites and in the UY-TSY ftp site, less that 1/100th of us have them. So, come on, all you anime, manga, sci-fi and other otaku! Give us some names!

What?!

You don't know how to do it?!

Oh, that's no problem! Here's how:

As you notice, the daishi'cha list is ordered sequentially from Daishi'cha #1 (Yoakenikkou, a real nice lady who serves as the Republic's Obundsperson, our special troubleshooter), to #100000 (Tenba, Nassur's first girlfriend and the deputy-head of botany and agriculture). Each entry contains the vital information (no, no body measurements!) on each of us. Here's mine:

029363
Lufy
YE/DI/N3
Gladiator Pilot, R.S.S. Hasei'cha
GF/P

Each entry is read as follows:

Now, the daishi'cha list has explanations as to how these entries are applicable to each of us. All you have to do if you want to name someone is to work with the list's parameters, have two dice (one ten-sided or D10 dice, one twenty-sided or D20 dice) on hand, the will to do a little research and patience. Then you'll make someone on Sagussa very happy!

So, here we go!

STEP ONE - THE SEQUENTIAL NUMBER

Take your D10 dice and roll five times. If you're one of these role-playing game freaks and you're stacked with D10 dice, grab five (this really works with five of different colours), decide which one goes where in the digits, then roll.

Now, you've got two problems right at this stage. First, the chances are there that you'll roll onto a number already taken. If that's so, just simply reduce or advance the number to a clear spot.

Secondly, after Henry (the Gatherer) got Daishi'cha #10000, he and James (the Chamber of Eternity) decided to multiply the number of girls ten-fold to make sure we have as variable a gene pool on Sagussa as possible. Which is really lucky, since five of Ataru's and Lum's six favourite daishi'cha (Noa, Honey, Catty, Makoto and myself, of course) came after #10000 (the other one, BTW, is Mie [#337]). If Henry didn't come after me, my sister Score and I would be dust on Yehisril these days instead of wowing them on Sagussa.

So, keep an eye on the race factor when you come close to a character already on the Daishi'cha List. If you're within 10 numbers of a person, the chances are really good that the daishi'cha's race you're working on is the same as the one already listed. This of course will save you some work in Step Three.

Now to Step Two.

STEP TWO - THE NAME

Impossible! This is no step! WRONG!!!!

If your character has a pretty unique name, which may not be popular in anime or manga, you've got this step made. However, do you want to know how many Lans, Amis/Amys, Hitomis, Megumis, Shinobus and so on are on Sagussa already...and that doesn't mention the three Iczers!

Spend time looking up and down the list. If your character's name matches one that's on the list, you can go one of two ways:

  1. "(NAME)-NO-(SUBNAME)." This is where you add a sub-name (two syllables, please) to the character's name to differentiate her from the ones already named. What you do is that you take the first two syllables from the series you're taking the character from (Japanese spelling please) and add it to the name with a "-no-" particle. For instance, look at Reinoevan.

Since there is already a Rei on Sagussa (named after Rei Hino a.k.a. Sailor Mars of "Sailor Moon"), the second Rei decided to attach a sub-name to her chosen name. She chose "Evan" from the show she took her name from, "Evangelion." Hence, Reinoevan's name is literally "Rei of Evan(gelion)."

Now, for those who might be tempted to use North American sci fi shows for character names, use the Japanese phonetic spelling approach to naming shows. For instance, Star Trek is spelt SU-TA-A TO-RE-KU. You would use "suta" as the sub-name. Be careful in case you have two shows starting with the same first two syllables.

  2. "(NUMBER)-(NAME)." If you don't want the headache of creating sub-names for the character, just add a number to the name. Like Japanese and Korean, Sagussan has a "classic" numbering system which goes this way:
    1. (modern reading "ai," old reading "ih")
    2. (modern reading "ei," old reading "ni")
    3. (modern reading "ii," old reading "mi")
    4. (modern reading "oi," old reading "si")
    5. (modern reading "ui," old reading "chi")
    6. (modern reading "ao," old reading "yi")
    7. (modern reading "eo," old reading "pi")
    8. (modern reading "io," old reading "wi")
    9. (modern reading "uo," old reading "ri")
    10. (modern reading "o," old reading "a")

The classic Sagussan numbering system works in the same way as the modern system: 15 = a-chi, 29 = ni-a-wi.

Just add the number to the name. Hence, we have "Nihitomi" (Second Hitomi), Miiczer (Third Iczer), etc.

Now that that's done, here's Step Three.

STEP THREE - RACE

If you have an idea of what race this person might belong to, just confirm it with the racial descriptions contained in the UY-TSY race notes. For instance, if a person is dark haired, she could easily be Fukunokami. Brown skin usually suggests a Toukonokouen. Pale skin could suggest a Tritonian or a Zeiwanite. Of course, you could always make them Terran just to save work.

But if you want to get creative, then follow the steps below:

1) Take a D10 die and make your Basic Race Roll as follows. If you roll 6 or above, you roll again to indicate the specific race:

D10 roll 1 or 2 = Vosian
D10 roll 3 or 4 = Yehisrite
D10 roll 5 = Ipraedies
D10 roll 6 or 7 = INNER RIM WORLDS (roll second time)
D10 roll 1 = Wasurite
D10 roll 2 = Tengu humanoid
D10 roll 3 = Ellsian
D10 roll 4 = Yizibahojei
D10 roll 5 = Fukunokami
D10 roll 6 = Oni-Urusian
D10 roll 7 = Seishin-Urusian
D10 roll 8 = Tritonian
D10 roll 9 = Terran
D10 roll 0 = Noukiite
D10 roll 8 or 9 = OUTER RIM WORLDS (roll second time)
D10 roll 1 = Gomianite
D10 roll 2 = Koomori
D10 roll 3 = Niphentaxian
D10 roll 4 = Gophentaxian
D10 roll 5 = Aimaiyite
D10 roll 6 = Zeiwanite
D10 roll 7 = Yaminokuni
D10 roll 8 = Toukonokouen
D10 roll 9 = Tofunokoibito
D10 roll 0 = Spotakite
D10 roll 0 = OTHER RACES (roll second time)
D10 roll 1 or 2 = A'g'san
D10 roll 3 = Cha'than
D10 roll 4 or 5 = Seifukusu (new one, code SE)
D10 roll 6 = Nekotengu
D10 roll 7 = Hustari
D10 roll 8 = Fukoi
D10 roll 9 = Ikkakusei
D10 roll 0 = Race unknown

And to prevent FAQs, here are some comments:

"What about hybrids like Hazel (#4712)?"

Hybrids are allowed. The most common are azhis'f (Vosian-Yehisrite) hybrids, which occur after #9000. Most hybrids would be obtained after #70000, which is when most of the worlds on this list got into space and began interacting with each other. There are NO Terran-(other race) hybrids!

As for Chief of Hydrographic Sciences Hazel, let's say that her origins are VERY unique. Wait until UY20YL to get the answer. (And for you doom and gloom sayers, no, this isn't the reincarnated Hazel [of Nassur's hybrids]).

"Hey!! Why aren't the Zephyrites and Kurakoans here?!"

That was a decision on the part of the planners of the Grand Design. Zephyrus and Kurakoa were the repositories of all the surviving clones when the Clone Rights War broke out. A bit of prejudice against half-lives (the Sagussan euphorism for a clone, it literally means half-a-life [all body, no brains]), the planners wanted as little Fourth Republic Sagussan influence in the Fifth Republic as possible.

"Hold it!! Planet Elle's a former Sagussan colony world, too! Ataru and Mie found that out in 'Tag Race Mark Three.'"

Actually, I should have said Gisan'cha-era Fourth Republic. Elle was settled WAY before the onslaught of the Age of Gisan'cha, so they held onto a lot of the traditional Sagussan cultural mores (not to mention their empathic potential, which makes them more than perfect to become daishi'cha).

Now with that done, here's the big step.

STEP FOUR - JOB

There are no "civilians" among the daishi'cha, meaning that there are no people without a job to call their own. Everyone has a place on this planet, which is seen as VERY necessary. To determine what job your girl will have, you could just create one out of thin air by looking at the list (if the job suits the temprement of the character you're basing the person on) or else follow the creative steps listed below.

Before we get to that, though, here are the general job listings and their basic equivalents on Earth (and, FYI, their uniform colour-codes, plus their rank titles and codes):

ADMINISTRATION

* These are basic titles. They vary according to discipline.

And now with all that said and done, let's get to the way you decide which one of these departments gets your girl:

1) Roll D10 for basic category, then roll a D20 for specific job category, then D10 again (and again if necessary) if there has to be any further subdivisions. This master list should solve all questions to that end:

After you choose the work category, roll D10 to determine if the person is affiliated with the SDF. D10 roll between 1 and 8 is a negative answer, D10 roll 9 and 0 a positive answer. If so, turn back up to the Defence listings and follow the D10 rolls as if the person was a member of the SDF (in a sense, she will be).

>From here, go to Step Five =>

STEP FIVE - RANK

As you can see from the Daishi'cha List, all positions of command (usually M2, O2, G2, I2 and above) are taken. If you want to write a story about someone who may one day be Prime Councillor, Engineer Commander, Head Scientist, etc, then by all means go ahead. What you are doing is determining the rank of the person NOW (at the end of UY-GFA). So, simply take a D10 and roll as follows:

D10 roll 1: M1, O1, G1, I1 rank
D10 roll 2: T4, N4, S4, P4 rank
D10 roll 3: T3, N3, S3, P3 rank
D10 roll 4-5: T2, N2, S2, P2 rank
D10 roll 6-0: T1, N1, S1, P1 rank

Then go back to the rank listings and determine which rank the person is addressed by. If they're in the SDF or SISF, it's very easy to determine; the ranks are right there. If, however they're in other departments, you'll have to look above. For science ranks, you'll have to also turn to the Daishi'cha List to get the specific title. For instance, if your girl is in Botany and you roll for T3, she is addressed as a Botanist Articifer.

Note that certain disciplines do not have technician ranks. If they are slated for Government, Education, External Affairs or Judiciary/Correction Services, the job switches to Administration (for the first three) or Internal Security. Psychology receives no technical/nursing assistance directly from Medical.

Now go to Step Six.

STEP SIX - POSITION

Here's where it gets really research-intensive.

First of all, if you haven't figured it out in the job listing, roll a D10 to indicate province of residence. (Sen'sha Seven, since it's a colony in a dome on a Pluto-like planet at the edge of Sagussa's home system, really wouldn't apply as a place to live). SISF and SDF personnel: this doesn't apply. Go as follows:

D10 rolls 1-4: Tere'na
D10 rolls 5-7: Kyre'sha
D10 rolls 8-0: Ly'sha

To list all the departments and units on Sagussa would take another 30 KBs on their own (and Fred left his master list back in Canada!), so just run through the Daishi'cha List and pick a position applicable to the person you've created.

We're almost done. Now to Step Seven.

STEP SEVEN - SERIES

This is really simple. Just choose or create a code for the series you took the story from. Look at the Daishi'cha List to ensure that the code you created hasn't already been used. Maximum five letters.

Now, Step Eight.

STEP EIGHT - NOTES

This is reserved for special notes which may apply to the person in the future.

If you created a Yehisrite daishi'cha between 20000-70000, you might want to make her a pirpirsiw'r like me. You might want to make her an affiliate of Ataru's Bodyguards (our answer to Megane and his kimei'ne patrol). You might want to make her a part of the Ikkoku Gang. Or there might be other things which would interest her, especially if you want to create this girl for your own fanfic story.

Also, since you're the one who's adding to this list, you'll be credited for your contribution, either by name or your net name.

And you're done! Simple, eh?!

If you want to expand on this basic listing, by all means do so. For instance, you might want to choose a bond-mate (marei'cha) for her (mine [romantic sigh] is Catty). Choose her musical talent of choice if you want (I play the drums, for example, as part of the "Hasei'cha's" ship's band, the Eternal Band). Write a small biography if that suits you. The list doesn't have to be that impersonal, you know.

Let your imagination fly!

Well, that's it for now. When you're done with this, e-mail Fred at gorgo@net.co.kr so he can amend his list.

So, stop staring at this and get to work!!

Remember...the wing always rides the air!
