Daily Complaints
-----------------------------------
Well, here it goes again. The is the new Daily Complaints thread, part N. For those new to this kind of thread, basically you just post anything that happened in your day that you'd like to complain about. Because really, everyone needs to vent at some time or another.

Here, I'll start.

My complaint is that for the past few days there's been a construction crew down the block working on renovating a building. The problem is, they're doing it mostly at night when there's not too many people around. That's all fine and dandy for the folks who don't live half a block away and have to listen to the noise of their machines while trying to get some sleep.

Re: Daily Complaints

My mother decided to try out Clearwire, and it worked great. Just as fast as Comcast for half the price. Except they started having trouble with Yahoo. So they had tech support check it out, and were told that their video card wasn't up to Yahoo's graphics-heavy standards, which I was skeptical about, even though their computer is a dinosaur.

Well, instead of consulting the resident expert (me), they go out and spend $60 bucks for a tech to tell them that their video card is just fine (they thought the other guy was telling them the card was broken  ). Well, they go and get mad at the dealer for their own poor choices when it was clear to me that the problem was a combination of their own shitty equipment (don't get me started on the wi-fi router that has to be reset several times a day) and the natural limitations of current wireless technology.

The cherry on top was having to watch my mother's neanderthal husband try to pick a fight with the dealer over returning the receiver to Clearwire.

Re: Daily Complaints

I'm seriously pissed. My phone line was disconnected only hours ago, despite all payments being up to date, so I called my phone company's hotline number to find out why. The automated system they had told me that my most recent payment (last Nov. 14) hasn't shown up on their system yet, for some reason, which I figured was the reason why it was disconnected — which wouldn't make sense even if I hadn't paid as the company had a 1 month grace period for late payments before disconnecting service. The icing on the cake was that it took me 30 minutes just to be able to get in touch with a customer service agent to fix things — and not because I had to wait on queue, which would have been understandable, but because I kept getting disconnected once I get past the automated voice response system and their phones started ringing. Simply unacceptable for a phone company! The sad part is that there's still time left on my contract with them, so I can't just cancel unless I want to be hit with an early termination fee.

Don't get me wrong - I love my job.

What other job pays you to sit up all night in front of a computer connected to the internet in the vagued hope that once an hour then phone might wrong with a noise complaint / dog attack /' other emergnecy situation.

My only complaint is recently their Web Marshall blocking software has gotten militant on pages with "offensive language".

For F***** sake. I'm 32 years old. I _think_ I can stand some naughty words every now and again. Most of what's blocked isn't anywheer near offensive to the average person.

It even blocked this thread O_O. To view it I had to use a citrix session to a company that we answer calls for 's computers running inside another citrix session.

Oddly enough it runs faster that way O_O

I got a ticket today for not wearing my seat belt. $100 to pay it off. I remember reading somewhere that it's one of many victimless crimes. I tend to agree, there, but the law seems insistent on protecting me from my self-destructive behavior. Or am I being fined because by not wearing my seatbelt, someone might have to clean up the mess if I'm throw from my car into an oncoming train?

Morbid thoughts aside, it sucks, because that's my first ticket in two years, maybe three. And today had been going so well, too. But that's for another thread.

I don't know about that "victimless crime" thing — never heard of it before — but here's irony for you: Anti-Seat Belt Law Crusader Killed in Car Accident. He was also the only person in the car not wearing a seatbelt, and yes, he was the only person who died. Everyone else apparently sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Victimless crimes are those actions which, while illegal, supposedly create no victim. For example, smoking marijuana could be considered a "victimless crime" in so far as, while smoking marijuana is illegal, it doesn't hurt you, or anyone else (this discounts what would happen if you got in an accident while high).

That said, I don't believe that is a sufficient justification for not wearing your seat belt. It's one thing to do XYZ that gets you thrown in jail so you can take it to court and appeal, and if you're lucky, get the supreme court to rule in your favor on it. It's another to essentially play Russian roulette to prove a point.

Sorry man, but as long as it's illegal, you shouldn't do it. There's other ways to fight this if you really don't believe in wearing your seat belt, but committing a crime isn't one of them.

It's like that guy on the ITIL forums who was bitching that the cops gave him an 1800 dollar ticket for doing 140 in a 40 (in Japan).

Re: Daily Complaints

Oh, I wasn't trying to justify it in dispute of the ticket. I just wish people wouldn't try so hard to save me from myself. There was that woman who campaigned to have the motorcycle helmet law repealed and when it was, she died in an accident she would have survived had she worn her helmet. Suppose that makes her the victim of universal irony. That said, I just think I should have the freedom to make bad/dumb choices. I'll pay the fine. I'll try harder to remember to wear the belt. but moreso because it's safe, that it's the law shouldn't really matter.

Oh, and complaint: I hate when someone calls you up, asks you to run around the warehouse looking for computer equipment with a vague asset tag number that's always printed on the side that's against a wall or on the floor (and you can't just unplug/unbolt it, you have to find a mirror or lay down to peer under it without interrupting its functioning) and then they leave for the day. If it wasn't that important, why tell me to go "now?" I could have had an underling do it at two in the morning!

However my computer always slows down within the first minute or so.

If my computer was just plain old, I wouldn't have minded it much. However it's a 1,8 ghz dual core with a geforce 8400M G TurboCache™, 2GB DDR2, latest drivers, etc.

OS or version of Windows?

Hard drive size, hard drive cache size and type (IDE/SCSI/SATA), rpm speed?.

Virtual Memory Size, and what all are you running in back and foreground when playing?

What using to play the Flash?

Is the Flash program local or streamed?

A *ton* of stuff would affect performance... not just the raw system.

Yeah last night I took my stepbrother to a friend's house, and got ticketed on the way home. I had nearly entered my "driving to work" mindset and missed my turn so I did a u-turn after spending a second or two stopped to see if anyone was coming. Nobody was, but there was a cop in a nearby McDonalds parking lot that saw me and followed me home. Little mistake that is going to cost me a few hundred dollars.

As for the seat belt logic I think it goes that a driver that isn't wearing a seatbelt could hit their head and lose control of the vehicle or have their foot slam on the gas making accidents much worse.

The day before yesterday two of my kittens died for reasons that I just didn't know, and now two other cats are deathly sick. I'm stressed out trying to care for sick, uncooperative cats, I haven't had a decent night's sleep in 24 hours and I my wallet will be taking a hit, which is bad timing especially as Christmas is coming up.

Sorry to hear about your cats, Hraefn. I hope the other two get well, soon.

We think that my bird died because he ate something off the floor that was likely some sort of poison that came off one of our shoes from outside (in Florida, you have you nuke your yard with chemicals to prevent weeds and fire-ants).

Sounds like they got into some bad food, or tried eating something that should not be eaten, like plastic.

Could also be the air in the house, think to check for anything... like gas leaks, or bad air detectors?

If your furnace only just started kicking in, could be air filters are bad.

We just lost a cat a few weeks ago as well. Hardly seven years old, and he went and keeled over in the basement. We're keeping our other kitty out of the basement now, just in case.

We're fairly certain it's something they ate. The good news is that they seem to be recovering, though I wouldn't say they're out of the woods just yet. I'm still having to force feed them, which isn't fun, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

That makes 3 cats in a short time? Correct? Are you absolutly certain it is something they ate? At this point, I would almost ask if they can determine the exact cause for it.

Because I would be worried it is something in the house, like my previous post in this thread mentioned.

Re: Daily Complaints

These are outdoor cats, so we're sure it's not something in the house. So whatever's causing it, it came from outside. They're prone to roaming, especially the one that just died (and yes, we're keeping the rest on a short leash for observation). The reason we suspect it might be something they ate is because: 1. I suspect my slob of a neighbor's been putting out rat poison recently, which he's known to do from time to time, despite our protests, and 2. there's an eatery nearby that might have also thrown out bad food. But you're right, we don't have inconvertible proof of the cause just yet.

The kitten finally passed away. When we brought it to the vet, it was at death's door and the vet didn't really expect it to last the day. It lived for almost one week more before its little body finally gave up. There was nothing we could have done, but that doesn't make it hurt less.

This has to be one of the worst weeks I've ever had.

A little positive news, though, as the other cat that was sick (a young adult) is now officially out of the woods.

Sorry that I didn't respond, I didn't expect someone to be looking for a solution. It isn't a serious problem, because I don't play a lot and I find it a good deterrent not to waste my time playing flash games. My opinion on this takes a 180 whenever I want to play a flash game though. I looked into some of the things you suggested, the only things I can find is that my videocard isn't a gaming card and I'm running Vista.

Recently I got into another computer related problem though. I went to a computer expo and bought two new RAM cards for my laptop.

I put it in my computer, when suddenly I noticed something curious. Their keys differ. After looking on the internet I found out that one was 667 Mhz while the other was 800Mhz. The company that sold them is half the country away, so one of these days I'm going to travel half to country to get my memory.

Edit: Actually I do have a question now, can I just put both new memory cards into my computer without a problem?

Re: Daily Complaints
-----------------------------------
That depends on the laptop/notebook... the safe response is 'No'.

The general rule is if it is faster than you need, it *should* cycle down to the speed it can go at.

In a desktop though, never mix speeds inside of a single channel, and in fact you should not mix brands either for that matter.

In a notebook, I would find out what speed exactly you need. If you need 800... do not even think of using that 667. If you need 667, and the two slots on the notebook are separate channels, the 800 *might* be ok, if all other specs are correct, but I would not attempt it. If they are the same channel, it will not work, at least not good.

I'm having a annoyance in upgrading my systems to Windows 7. I figured with the new OS, get new HD's, and since the systems had windwos, I get the upgrade version. So far, despite the fact Microsoft's own install instructions that come with my copies of Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade tell me to do a clean install due to it being XP, each copy so far has forced me to call Microsoft, claiming it has determined the key is invalid for when doing clean installs. Then Microsoft needs to walk me through a process to correct the issue.

Had I know that would happen, I would have saved myself the inconvience and gotten either OEM installer disks, or full retail versions, rather than upgrade versions.

Oh yeah. They just can't do anything until the transaction is done processing; which usually means the 'store' sends a receipt proving the purchase. Unfortunately, whoever did this was aware of that, it's been 5 days, and it's still processing... if it doesn't clear up tomorrow, I'm going to call my account manager. Well... today has been an unusual and annoying day. Not exceedingly bad, just very annoying.

1. Found out yesterday my yearly performance reviews are due at work one day early (10th, not 11th) due to some morons in the IT division that want to take down the human resources support sites the day they were supposed to be due. I'll have to rush and get them done tomorrow either at work, or stay late after work. And since I was hired mid-year, the responses and notes they have on how they should be filled out do not apply to me.

2. Found out today that yesterday my doctor decided to up and quit his practice. And I was due for a checkup. Fortunately, my prescriptions, which were due up in 2 days, was able to be filled by the local drugstore, so I've got a month before I have to find a new doctor.

3. Found out today that my bank was bought out on the 4th, and my assets were transferred to it on the 5th. All without me getting any notice, or seeing it in the news. I was last there on I think it was the 3rd. If I'm reading things right, I've got 6 monthsat most before they kill the accounts entirely, or I sign with the new bank and get new accounts from them.

Ah... life.

Meh... got worse...

I go into work early today... figuring I can merely stay after work if need be to finish the thing. I turn on the system, go into email, and see a nice big notice by the boss that they have to be in by 12:00 noon, not 8pm...

And of course, there was a meeting today at 11:00am, so it really was 11:00am it had to be done by.

Crap...

Fortunately, I had most of it in draft form, but I had to reformat it and whatnot to get it to better fit the final requirements... I had to stop working on other things though to get it done in time.

Well.. for better or worse, it is done and in now. We will see eventually how I did. But I'm off Friday and Monday, I soonest I could know is Tuesday.

Unless I did so bad on it they call me at home...

Today I found myself remembering all the good "golden" years fo fanfiction so I tried to check all those spider web infested links to fics of old ... and found that jeffrey "oneshot" wong's page had dissapeared.

A shame, almost 20mb of fanfiction lost to the passage of time. While his jwd fics were quite a bit over to the top, I found them to be an enjoyable read. Anyone knows where else to find them?

For those that don't remember (or have no idea) of what I'm talking about, here's an incredibly amusing shot version of his fics. Enjoy! Short, short version

Re: Daily Complaints

Well... overall it has been a fairly crappy week

- Weather early in week was yet more snow... last 3 days have been slightly above frezing, melting some of it, but it has brought heavy fog

- My one aunt died

- My one brother had dental surgery, and I've been running errends for him

- My one cat has been diagnosed with both kidney and liver problems, and is predicted to not last long. She is fairly old though at just under 15 years

- I had caught up on all my normal workload at work, but due to a location in another part of the country being behind, my boss offered up my services to them... after doing a bunch of stuff for them, it turned out they changed corporate policy, to where what I did, have the change come through sooner, would not have needed to be done at all.

- Today, one of the VCR/DVD players in the house died, the one in the living room... This at least was almost a nonissue. That entertainment system in the living room had one of the ITX MultiMedia Boxes I built back in November/December connected to it. It can play DVD's fine, it just needs more time than I like to start them through DVD43 and autoplay. It is just I built them mainly to play stuff across the network, music, music videos, downloaded anime/movies, etc...

Grrr... and now the refrigerator is making noises...

I cleaned out the dust, and repositioned it. The noise is lessened, but not stopped. Tomorrow I think I'll take the back panel of the freezer off and see if I can see anything wrong, might turn it off and defrost it for a while as well... modern refrigerators are not supposed to need that, but it could be the issue, since it seems it is the vents/fans in the freezer portion making the noise.

Re: Daily Complaints

I finally have a decent post to write in here.

Didn't have enough internet access to post here before, but I live in Concepcion, Chile, the center of the 8.8 earthquake last weekend.

Well, I'm alive and well, and so is all my family thank God for it. We've had our share of problems since the government took almost 48 hours to decide to put the military on the street, which cause loots and massive civilian unrest in the zone.

We finally have power back, though water and food is still an issue. Just dropping by to say everything is ok.

It'll probably take a couple of weeks before I've got regular internet access over here, and it'll take months to have anything resembling a normal live back. Whatever service the earthquake or the tsunami didn't destroy, the rioting people made a damn good work in destroying, so no gas, no food, no water, no nothing.

At least I've got power & net running back again. It sure helps to keep your mind away of the horror outside.

Did volunteer work the first two days, but then my damned stomach acted on me and I had to stop... having a vicious colon does not suit well with not having a water supply after all.

The posted death tolls I've seen so far for the Chile earthquake does not come close to the ones for the Haiti one several weeks ago.

Re: Chile vs. Haiti, a lot of it I think has to do with the fact that Chile gets earthquakes fairly often so they are better prepared. Also, the infrastructure is better.

Yep, quakes are an everyday thing in here, it's just that those over 7.5 are quite rare. The one that happened in Haiti wouldn't have cause much damage in here, but this one was way too much for us. The tsunami didn't help either, nor did the stupid governmet (the first in Chilean history to not call on the military right after a mayor natural catastrophe ... with horrible consecuences).

My comp is crashing all the time.

The mouse and keyboard freeze, it doesn't boot right, and when I tried to use the recovery partion to reset it to factory conditions... the recovery process corrupted.

I need to get a new computer.

But, I can't find anywhere around here that will sell a computer with 32-bit os. They all sell 64-bit Windows 7 now. I need a 32-bit to run all my old games and devices.

I would prefer Windows XP, but they don't make those anymore.

My current computer is a HP Pavilion a820n, it lasted close to 6 years.

Now it's failing...

And the local Office Depot, where I got it in 2004 sometime, only sells 64-bit now.

Do you:

A: Grill the customer's burger to perfection as an apology for making him wait.

or

B: Slap everything together without actually grilling a damn thing.

Sigh... my Subaru Legacy has been rear ended....

Thankfully... damage is all but nil. Surface wise *maybe* a couple chips in the paint.

I called insurance company and they set up an appointment to get it looked at to insure nothing underneath the rear bumper is damaged, but if not... then they are likely simply going to close the case, but surface wise, I see practically nothing wrong, no cracks, scraps, dents, etc...

Ditto for her car.

Yeah... I gave a over the phone recorded statement of how it occured to the insurance company already, and gave the info I took down at the scene. I have an appointment to get the car looked at on Wednesday.

Regrettibly, while I know a lot about cars I'm not a mechanic, so I do not know for sure nothing is wrong underneath the bumper, but on the surface it looks pretty much fine physically, for sure no dents, dings, scrapes, ect.... It is/was raining, so there were a few tiny spots that could either be chipped paint, or merely dirt. The airbags did not go off, nor any other warning lights.

It could have been a lot worse.

Hopefully, they will find nothing.

Except a somewhat similar incident that occured to me back in 1996, the last accident I was in was back in 1991 (combined damages to both cars in the incident was only to bumpers). So I've a fairly clean history in regards to accidents.

Well... what a crappy week, in fact, with the accident earlier in month and some gutter issues last week, it has been a crappy month. In any case...

Today I get a call at work that the garage door will not close. At first looked like a roller bit the dust, so go and get some parts...

While I was correct on the roller, I did not notice until after getting the parts that the cable on that side of the garage also disconnected or snapped and lost all tension, thus that was the ultimate cause.

While I am willing to replace most garage door hardware such as rollers and hinges, the spings and cables I'm not really willing to mess with as one mistake can be quite dangerous, so got the number of a place that fixes doors from my neighbor, whom ironically got their entire door replaced last week fro the same issues.

Cannot get it taken care of tomorrow though, as we already have someone coming out to look at our driveway to get an estimate for a replacement.

I also had two new directtv recievers arrive today, as I am supposed to be replacing my current ones with the new ones. Could not get to them though due to the Garage door issues.

I also had a light switch stop working, that will be an easy replacement, once I can find the time to get to it.

Grrr.... and I've been trying to clear my schedule... so much for that.

Well, I just bought a ps3 last week, and after playing ff XIII until my eyes dried up I tried getting into the psn online store. Guess what? Because I now live in Chile, I can't access it. Talk about discrimination.

Nevermind, I entered my old Cincinnatti address and voila! I get access to the store! Yay for me ... right?

Not so much. I can't buy squat from it since I don't have a US credit card. But... you can buy psn cards, right? Not so much, getting a US psn card in here costs ... double. Yeah, like I'm going to pay USD 20 for a USD card.

I'd very much like to go to whoever runs the sony psn store and shove him a chilean flag up his a#$.

Now I need to:

a) Find a trusted friend in the US.
b) Send him money.
c) Get him to send me the psn card codes so that I can buy from the store.

For some reason I feel like the online version of a black dude back in the 50's...

Re: Daily Complaints

Rotten encounter with a phone outlet. Something athat *should* have been simple... was not.

Had a old style 4 prong phone connector seemingly stop working, was working until about 3 days ago. It was connected to the DirectTV box. First noticed the issue when it stopped having valid names in the menus for names of movies yet viewing movies and changing channels was fine. The other unit is working fine.

1. Assumed it was merely the phone cord, no go
2. Pulling the old connector out revealed one of the prongs somehow snapped off.
3. Went to Radio shack, picked up a modern four cable surface mount wall connector.
4. Discovered for some insane reason, I have 3 wires, not 2 or 4 as is the norm, but colors matched, and connected everything.
5. No dial tone, the ends on the old cable looked a bit worn, so cut them off, trimed back the wire, and reconnected, no signal
6. Went into the basement... discovered somehow it got disconnected on the end in the basement, so had to redo that end up (I've *no* clue how that one happened). Now get a dial tone.
7. Go to mount the thing to the wall... the holes do not line up.... so had to make new ones.
8. Finally get everyhing back together.
9. Diagnostics on the DirectTV box shows it recognizes the connection correctly.

But... it has not updated the menu's yet with new content.

For now, assuming it only does so either when resetting the box, or on specific times. I can live another day or so with invalid names... longer than that and I'll call and see if they can force a reset on the box.

You probably just need a decent anti-virus.

Furthermore, you need to turn off the save-settings function when you rid your computer of viruses, restart, then turn the save-settings function back on. Otherwise, the viruses don't go away (they're saved in the settings which just get re-loaded right back onto the computer, re-infecting it.

Mid year reviews are supposedly this week, but I've not been interviewed yet... should I be concerned they are waiting until the last day?

And I just learned the moon is shrinking. It is now estimated to be some 600ft (a while 6 hundred feet) smaller in diameter now than it was 1 billion years ago, and it is considered blockbuster news by the community. They think the Earth might be shrinking as well, only that the environment is erasing the evidence.

And I just got a new NAS device yesterday and connected up a new Raid 0 array to it for housewide network storage, to upgrade and replace my old setup.. turned out the device *by design* when you copy files to it are restamped with the current file time and date stamp... I'll have to look at my options and figure out what to do about it, because that is a serious design flaw. A pity, as it works great otherwise, and is much faster than the old unit.
